Joseph D. Thomas’s Story
CT State Gateway Alumnus and Industry Leader: Joseph D. Thomas’s Journey from Technical School to VP

Joseph D. Thomas founded his own firm, J.T. Consulting Services, after 33 years in the electric and energy sector, most recently with United Illuminating-UIL Holdings-AVANGRID. At UI, he rose to Vice President of Electric System Operations, Fleet and Logistics, along with a previous role as Vice President of Customer Service. He started his electrical career at Eli Whitney Technical High school and worked at various electrical contracting firms and Yale University.
Thomas attended night school for 18 years. He is a graduate of Gateway’s precursor, Greater New Haven State Technical College, and is a member of the Gateway Alumni Network Advisory Board. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Bridgeport Engineering Institution (Fairfield, Conn.); an MBA from the University of New Haven, (West Haven, Conn.); and a Certificate in Labor Relations from Cornell University, (New York, N.Y.). He is a Board member of the American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region and Chair of the Board Development and Engagement Committee. His past board leadership positions include the UIL Holdings Board of Directors, the UConn/Eversource Energy Center Advisory Board, the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies Power Delivery Executive Committee, and the Energy Center Knowledge Summit Operations Board.
“I’m excited to bring my leadership skills and industry expertise to my Board service,” Thomas said. “My education at both technical high school and community college were foundational to my success. I hope to focus on building a strong relationship between Gateway and the utility industry and helping students understand the importance of working hard, staying committed to your dreams, and having a passion for success.”
